News: BBC reporters receive a spooky makeover!
We welcomed two special visitors to our Adams Building campus in the lead-up to spooky season, as BBC Radio Nottingham reporters Maria and Viraj came to our hair and beauty salon with a unique request: to get a spooky transformation!
They met with 17-year-old student, Niamh Daws, who gave them Halloween makeovers while they reported on the experience. Viraj felt “fabulous” and “powerful” with a creepy 3D spider crawling over his eye, while Maria braved a gruesome gash on her hand that looked incredible, albeit perhaps a little too realistic!
Niamh who is in her second year studying Level 3 Hair and Media Make-up, said:
“For me, Halloween is all year round because of what I get to do at college.”
Hair and Beauty Lecturer, Karen Picker, said:
It’s mad that I teach this course because I’m a little squeamish. The make-up that the students often create is quite realistic and can look pretty scary at times, I don’t know how I deal with it!

Niamh continued,
“I’m really inspired by special effects in movies like gore or practical effects that make people look scary or horrible, it’s amazing the different things you can create out of make-up.”
From a young age, Niamh knew she wanted a career in theatrical and special effects make-up. She said:
“From around 13, I took an interest in make-up pallets and thought that experimenting with the colours was so fun. Then covid came and I spent a lot of the time doing makeup and face painting on myself, then posting videos of the process on TikTok. I also took GCSE art and loved it, so I knew I wanted to pursue a creative route, and it developed from there.”
When researching her study options, Niamh came across the Hair and Media Make-up course at Nottingham College. She said:
The course sounded like so much fun. There are so many different elements to it, including special effects which made me so excited.
I’ve felt so supported on this course, and I’ve already learnt so much. I really enjoy the projects we get to do when we make costumes to go with the theatrical make-up, creating one cohesive look.

When speaking about the type of make-up artistry she prefers, Niamh said:
“I’m much more interested in special effects than something like bridal make-up or simple beauty.
I guess it’s like an escape, if I want to be an Avatar one day and a clown the next, I can do it. I can make anything happen really, and this subject is so broad, there’s such a variation.”
Upon completing her course, Niamh is planning a gap year filled with rest, research, and hopefully some travel before pursuing university or an apprenticeship. Looking ahead to her career, she said:
I’m hoping to one day be turning actors into full body aliens. To completely transform humans into God-knows-what. I would love to someday work on superheroes in the Marvel universe.
