Nottingham College is a great place to work and we want to attract and retain the best staff for our learners.

Our recruitment process ensures that all applicants have an equal opportunity to succeed. We have a commitment, as part of our diversity strategy, to work towards a staffing profile at the College that matches that of the local community and as such we welcome and support all applicants.

We particularly welcome applications from applicants of all cultural backgrounds who are currently under-represented in our workforce. Disabled applicants who meet the essential shortlisting requirements will be guaranteed an interview.

All successful applicants will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

The Recruitment Process

Applications are encouraged via our online system and we include the assessment date in the advert to make sure you have the earliest possible notification.

The guidance notes are provided to support you in completing your application form. We base our selection processes purely on the person specification for the job and you therefore need to make sure you give us as much detail as possible of how you match every one of the criteria on the person specification marked as ‘A’ (assessed at the application stage).

Once we receive your application form it is logged with our HR team and then anonymised and passed to the recruiting manager for shortlisting. The scoring guide used is as follows:

  • 3 points if you have demonstrated that you meet the criteria very well by using a number of examples.
  • 2 points if you meet the criteria but may not have demonstrated it with a number of examples, or may not have explained the examples in any great detail.
  • 1 point if you have mentioned the criteria but have not given any examples in your form.
  • 0 points for if you haven't mentioned or met the criteria at all in your application.

Once all application forms have been scored the candidates with the highest points will be selected to come in for an assessment process. We will contact you by telephone and email to invite you in and confirm if you have to prepare any tasks in advance.

We don’t contact unsuccessful candidates at this stage due to the volume of applications we receive. As a general guide if you have not heard from us within 6 weeks of your application it usually means that you have been unsuccessful. Please do not let this deter you from applying with us again in the future!

You will always receive a warm welcome and an introduction to the day. You will then be given a variety of tasks to complete; these will measure your ability to carry out relevant aspects of the role. Our assessment centres may involve meeting a group of staff and/or learners and for any lecturing posts you will be asked to prepare a micro-teach.

The recruiting manager will be the chair of the formal interview panel and will be supported by two colleagues, one of whom will be from our HR Services team or another independent member of staff.

You will be asked a series of questions based on the person specification and we will use the same scoring method as above to score your answers. It is therefore important that you give as much detail and as many examples as you can. All candidates will be asked the same questions. The panel may wish to query aspects of your application form at the end of the interview. You will then have an opportunity to clarify any points or ask questions about the role or life at Nottingham College. You may take notes into the interview with you and refer to them throughout the process.

The panel will appoint the best candidate based on the scores from your performance during the day.

We try to let candidates know within 72 hours whether they have been successful. If you are not successful you will be offered the opportunity for some feedback from the day.

If you are successful, we will send out a new starter pack that will detail the next steps of the recruitment process. Your start date will be subject to a number of checks, including but not exclusively:

  • Satisfactory references
  • Copies of your qualification certificates
  • Sight of your Passport
  • Satisfactory medical clearance
  • Satisfactory clearance from the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)

Our HR Services team are here to support you throughout the process and will be in touch with you at each stage. Once we have confirmed a start date with you we will send out your contract, a copy of which you will need to sign and return to the College and you’ll be ready to join us!

You will have an HR induction as well as an induction into your team and the College as a whole.

We value all of our staff and interest from applicants and if you have any feedback for us please let us know by email: people.services@nottinghamcollege.ac.uk
