Introduction to Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (Level 1) — Full-time
Course outline
This is a great taster course into the hair and beauty industry.
You will learn basic treatments in the hair and beauty industry and also give you the opportunity to work on your employability skills preparing you for higher levels and work placement.
You will choose either the Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing pathway and depending on which you choose you will study:
Beauty Therapy Pathway
Practical units include:
- Basic skincare
- Basic make-up application
- Basic manicure application
- Create an image
- Basic nail art
Hairdressing Pathway
You’ll learn how to correctly shampoo and condition hair, and styling techniques including plaiting, twisting and pinning.
You will also study theory based units researching the industry in detail and learning basic skills in assignment writing:
- Time management
- Organisational skills
- Employability skills
- Social skills
- Communication skills
- CV writing
- Interview techniques

If you haven't already achieved GCSE English and Maths at a grade 4 or above, you will also, dependent on your grade, study either GCSEs or Functional Skills as part of your course.

Entry requirements | You’ll need 4 GCSE’s at Grade 3-2 (D-F) including English and maths. All students must undertake and pass a practical dexterity test prior to enrolment to ensure you are suitable for this course. |
Teaching & assessment | Practical assessments will take place in one of our salons working on members in the group and clients, you can also bring along friends and family members for a pamper. Theory assessments will take place through exams, assignments and creating a mood board. |

Additional information | You will need to buy a kit and uniform to wear whenever you are at College. Kit and uniform costs are to be confirmed and will be discussed at interview.
