Course outline

This brand-new Level 5 HND Dance top-up course is designed to provide students with the technical, artistic, and professional skills required for a career in the global dance industry. The course offers advanced training in performance, choreography, and critical engagement with contemporary dance practice.

The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Dance is an exciting new course offering an opportunity to further develop and enhance your practical skills to progress into the ultra-competitive world of dance performance. The course provides the chance to develop as an original artist and achieve a wide-ranging knowledge of the performing arts industry and give your future career a dynamic head start.

This course is provided by Expressions Academy of Performing Arts in Mansfield in partnership with Nottingham College.

The HND in Dance has been designed to develop students' knowledge and skills in areas such as choreography, audition preparation, company working and dance contextualisation. It focuses primarily on practical learning and skills development in a wide variety of dance disciplines.

  • Working in the Performing Arts
  • Contemporary Dance 2
  • Dance for Musical Theatre
  • Jazz Dance 2
  • Commercial Dance 2
  • Performance Project

Facilities:

The Expressions Academy of Performing Arts is located in the centre of Mansfield. The purpose-built campus offers 9 fully air-conditioned state-of-the-art spaces with sprung floor, sound facilities, mirrored rooms and natural light in a spacious and contemporary building. The largest studio is 3,864 square feet (46 feet wide by 85 feet long) ensuring no overcrowding in lessons. The Academy also provides purpose-built study rooms, common room meeting areas with hot and cold drinks and snacks. Wifi is available throughout with full CCTV covering all areas for added security.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have already passed (or expect to achieve) a full Level 4 qualification in a performance-related subject (such as a Higher National Certificate, Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE), or the first year of a degree. In all cases, the entry qualification must be worth a minimum of 120 academic credits at undergraduate level.

Also, we expect applicants to be working at (or to demonstrate competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and maths/numeracy. We accept GCSE passes in English Language and maths at Grades 9 to 4 (previously A* to C).

Applicants who meet the minimum advertised entry requirements will be invited to attend an audition and informal interview day at EPA Mansfield.

Mature applicants not meeting the standard entry criteria but with sufficient relevant industry or life experience are very welcome to apply.

Teaching & assessment

Assessment is continuous, providing a range of evidence of your learning. This will include: practical demonstrations and live performances, essays, journals/log books, rehearsal evidence, video evidence, presentations, group projects and e portfolios.

Progression

After successfully completing the HND in Dance, you could top-up to a BA (Hons) Performing Arts or BA (Hons) Dance degree or similar (subject to entry requirements) or enter employment.

Previous graduates have gone on to work in the West End, UK and abroad; film and TV, cruise ships, holiday venues, community arts projects or into choreography/teaching.
