Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

This course is for anyone wanting to improve their own personal development or help others in areas of Life Skills and Wellbeing. It is also helpful if you are wanting to use these skills at work or are considering a career or volunteering in this area.

During the course you will:

  • Learn the 5 steps of Maslow, evaluate and apply to self.
  • Brainstorm ideas for healthy diet and sleep, relate and put ideas into action.
  • Understand the areas of the anxiety cycle, analyse, evaluate and relate to self.
  • Learn anxiety management techniques, consider at least 3 to apply throughout the week.
  • Explore the elements of identity, complete 3 exercises & challenge limiting beliefs and organise values.
  • Understand the 3 building blocks of confidence, explore ideas to build each block.
  • Learn 3 types of behaviors, relate to self and challenge to practice assertiveness daily.
  • Focus on, identify and write down short, mid and long-term goals. Make 1 SMART goal in each area.
  • Learn the 4 steps of The GROW model. Create an action plan to achieve goals.
  • Reflect on key learning.
  • Understand and complete the wheel of life.
  • Create action and progression plan and apply daily.

You will also learn to raise self-awareness, learn to use tools, exercises and learn Personal Development and Life Coaching skills to help yourself and others overcome barriers, learn skills to manage anxiety, build confidence in all areas of life. Identify goals and aspirations, learn Life Coaching techniques to coach yourself and others.

This course is an excellent introduction into the world of Personal Development and Life Coaching, you will gain many skills to improve both your own well-being and those around you. We are currently seeing unprecedented levels of psychological distress. People are now more than ever in need of help, advice and support. This is also an excellent course if you are considering working in this much needed area as for example, A Life Coach, Personal development or Wellbeing Trainer, Support Worker or Volunteer, or simply using the skills you will learn to enhance your own personal development.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

Entry Level

There are no formal entry requirements but you must be aged 19+.

You will complete a weekly “Student Diary” and so ESOL students should be studying at entry 3 or higher to enrol on a Community course taught by non-ESOL tutor.

Tutors will give weekly verbal and written feedback. You will complete a short workbook and set your own personal targets, as well be progressing though the general course learning outcomes. This will help you and your tutors record progression on the course.

The course tutor and development workers can advise of other learning opportunities within Community faculty or signpost you to courses in other vocational areas of Nottingham College.

You will have the opportunity to receive progression guidance from an external locally based agency “Futures for You” whilst on the course.

If you are interested in progressing onto leisure courses in your chosen subject, you may have opportunities to do so at Nottingham College or be signposted to other leisure courses in the Nottingham area.
