Make Stained Glass to Sell — Part-time

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

You will learn additional skills to build on previous experience of design and working with glass to create more challenging projects. The focus of the course will be learning techniques to complete individual project(s) of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to explore the enterprise skills required to go on and sell your own work.

Topics include:

• Techniques and skills of stained glass crafts
• Working with coloured glass, copper foil and solder
• How to market, price and sell your craft item

Course knowledge and skills:

• Further stained glass making skills in Tiffany (copperfoil) technique.
• Researching the world of stained glass – using books and/or digital resources
• Teamwork and communication skills
• Further glass design skills, finding your style.
• Considering all factors relevant to selling your own stained glass items

On this course, you will learn to :

• Cut sheets of coloured glass, grind and foil the edges and then solder them together to make finished pieces of stained glass. The pieces will become more complex, working at a pace that suits you.
• Start to develop related skills around your glasswork, eg wire work, 3-D glass work and start to find your own style and potential niche in the stained glass selling world.
• Learn how to price and present your work, considering potential markets, live or online.
• Source glass materials and equipment around UK.Develop a wider understanding of stained glass in the world around us through researching different artists or themes.
• Share information with other learners in group discussions and digital formats.
• Further practise the skills of stained glass design.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.
