Course Introduction

Community courses are “first steps” for adults to learn new skills, develop confidence, meet others in welcoming classroom. The purpose of courses is to support students into further learning or employment (paid or voluntary).

The course can be for anyone wanting to improve their own personal development or help others in areas of Life Skills and Wellbeing.

It is also helpful if you are wanting to use these skills at work or are considering a career or volunteering in this area.

This unit focuses on educating students in techniques which can be used in everyday life to improve wellbeing overcome barriers and achieve goals in all areas of life. The course introduces learners to various relaxation methods and professional Beauty Therapy techniques as well as exploring ways to introduce self-care and learning into everyday life. Giving a safe non-judgmental environment enables learners to explore beauty, self-care and relaxation and identify issues, barriers, raised self-awareness allows students to take responsibility for their choices and plan of action to overcome problems and achieve goals using techniques learnt. This reminds learners what they already know and allows them to draw on experience and transferable skills to solve current problems. 

The course is structured to include various student needs., making it very inclusive for both male and female learners, Learners just wanting to improve self-care and relaxation as well as giving a good taste of Beauty Therapy to learners considering a career in this area.

Topics include:

  • Understanding of self-care. 
  • Complete consultation. 
  • Knowledge of basic oils.
  • Learn 5 massage groups and understand the benefits of massage. 
  • Learn routine and practice arm massage.
  • Understand what relaxation & have ideas is to practice. 
  • Consider at least 3 to apply throughout the week.
  • Learn cleanse, tone and moisturise and understand facial massage.
  • Learn salon facial. Practice using exfoliators and masks.
  • Perform mini manicure and understand the benefits.
  • Learn and practise basic nail art techniques.
  • Learn and practise progressive muscle relaxation exercise
  • Explore ideas of what mindfulness is. 
  • Perform autogenic relaxation exercise.
  • Reflect on key learning. 
  • Take part in a visualisation exercise.
  • Create action and progression plan and apply in daily life.

You should attend regularly and arrive on time to make best progress on course.

You will complete a short diary weekly in class time, to record your progress and receive written tutor feedback.

You will use Microsoft Teams whilst on the course. Microsoft Teams is a free, safe online app used by Nottingham College for tutors to contact students.

Using Teams will also enable you to develop and feel confident using digital skills.

Entry Level

There are no formal entry requirements but you must be aged 19+.

You will complete a weekly “Student Diary” and so ESOL students should be studying at entry 3 or higher to enrol on a Community course taught by non-ESOL tutor.

Tutors will give weekly verbal and written feedback. You will complete a short workbook and set your own personal targets, as well be progressing though the general course learning outcomes. This will help you and your tutors record progression on the course.

The course tutor and development workers can advise of other learning opportunities within Community faculty or signpost you to courses in other vocational areas of Nottingham College.

You will have the opportunity to receive progression guidance from an external locally based agency “Futures for You” whilst on the course.

If you are interested in progressing onto leisure courses in your chosen subject, you may have opportunities to do so at Nottingham College or be signposted to other leisure courses in the Nottingham area.

Basic materials will be provided. Students are advised to wear an apron or old clothes to lessons as some materials can stain.
